About Words That Actually Work
Clear, direct writing from someone who has worked inside the system you’re selling to.
My story
I’m Russell Gullo, a retired U.S. Navy Senior Chief Petty Officer. I served nearly 19 years as an Aviation Electronics Technician. As a Senior Chief, I managed an aviation squadron’s production department of five divisions and 140 personnel, supervised the quality assurance division, and developed and screened 22 technical instruction courses, including instructor manuals, student manuals, and workbooks.
In the Navy, I learned that clear communication isn’t a nice-to-have. When people depend on your instructions, reports, and decisions, your words must be accurate, direct, and understood the first time.
After the Navy, I worked in operations, supervision, sales, and branch management. I opened a branch that became my company’s second most profitable office, worked as a field operations supervisor, and studied business management at Chapman University. Each role taught me something about how organizations actually work, and how much depends on people being able to explain what they do.
Why I write for veteran-owned businesses
Many veteran business owners run exceptional companies but struggle to describe that strength to people outside the military world. Their experience is real, and it deserves to be easy to see. I understand the language of the service and the language of business, and I help translate between them.
How I work
- I listen first. Every project starts with questions about your goals and your reader.
- I write in your voice. My job is to help you sound like the best version of yourself.
- I keep it plain. No buzzwords, no padding.
- I’m honest about my role. I’m a writer and editor, not an attorney or compliance consultant, and I’ll tell you when something needs their review.
- I respect your time. You get a clear scope, a set price, and a timeline you can plan around.
Where I am today
I’m new to freelancing and building my portfolio, so I’m offering three pilot projects to veteran-owned small businesses and government contractors through December 12, 2026. If you’d like to see how I write, my sample work is on the Services and Samples page.
I’m based in Paso Robles, California, and take on projects from businesses anywhere in the country, especially here in California.
Let’s talk
If your company has a strong story and you want it told clearly, I’d like to hear about it.
